DESIGNATE IRAN’S ISLAMIC REVOLUTIONARY GUARD CORPS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) wields terrorism as a tool of statecraft and has done so since Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.

The IRGC was founded to uphold and guard the Islamic Republic’s political system in addition to thwarting interference by foreign bodies and coups by Iran’s military or “deviant movements”.

Among its primary regional goals is the destruction of Israel and refers to Israel as a conspiracy against the Middle Eastern region backed by the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

In various iterations the IRGC has carried out or sponsored acts of terrorism worldwide, from Argentina with the suicide bombing at the Argentine Jewish Mutual Association community center in Buenos Aires to the United States of America, where an NYPD intelligence report connected the IRGC or its proxies to nine foiled international plots against Jewish or Israeli targets.

Furthermore, the IRGC provides financial and military aid to terrorist organizations including Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Kata’ib Hezbollah in Iraq, al-Ashtar Brigades in Bahrain, and other terrorist groups in Syria and around the Gulf.

With a budget of $6.96bn as of 2020 (dwarfing the conventional military budget of $2.73bn), the IRGC’s prominence in Iran’s global geo-political activities cannot be overstated. In recent years, the IRGC has planned terrorist attacks in Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kenya, Bahrain, Turkey, and the United States of America.
